In this guide, I will show you how to run your own small business selling items on Instagram. I will explain every detail and what you will need, how to get the items and what works best for selling them. This technique can easily net you $300-$400 per month! This is not a drop shipping guide! Guide was written by James in 2017.
How to make $400 a month using Instagram Selling your Own Products
First I’ll start with what you will need to run your small business. We are NOT drop shipping!
1. Computer with internet
2. Phone with Instagram. I recommend running 2 pages or more in a good niche to sell
3. Printer/label printer to print shipping labels (I use the Dymo 4XL)
4. Packaging materials 4×6 bubble mailers and tape
5. $50-100 to buy products. That’s nothing compared to what you will make in profit I promise!
Now you should setup an account on Spreesy.com (completely free to list but they take a tiny selling fee) to host your products. Come up with a catchy business name. They take a very small cut but that’s not an issue because we will be making so much profit that you will laugh every time you sell a product. They also allow you to make coupon codes and post as many products as you want for no additional cost. Customers can buy with credit cards or paypal which is absolutely a must! Once you do this you need to put your store link in your instagram bio section.
Products and Pricing
It’s important that you choose small products like jewelry, stickers, keychains etc that will easily fit into a 4×6 bubble mailer. Here are the mailers I buy.
You want to keep the weight under 4 ounces per sale. This will cost you $2.61 to ship anywhere within the USA. Again, that’s nothing compared to the profit margin you will be making. You want to price your products between $15 to $18 each. You are more likely to sell items under $20.
Where to get products?
Simply put, AliExpress.com. They sell everything you can imagine at wholesale prices. (hint: using the Aliexpress app, often times you can save more!) You can get most jewelry pieces under a dollar! For example, here is a dainty heart charm necklace for .28 cents! That’s right, you will be then selling these for $15 to $18 each! Keep your prices under $20, that’s the trick to selling more at a quicker rate. AliExpress takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to get products to your door. This is because they are based in China and it takes time to process the items through customs. So get to know your sellers on AliExpres and sometimes they even give you better deals after you buy from them a few times. Every penny counts! Ask the AliExpress sellers if they have Skype or other chat software so you can chat with them and strike up better deals. Do this by sending them a message on AliExpress. Often times if you buy in bulk they will give you a much better deal.
Building an Audience on Instagram
This is where most people go wrong. Let me start out by saying if you run a business selling your own products, it’s important that you don’t sell ads for other people on your Instagram pages. This will dilute the possibility of sales on your own products and will ultimately send potential customers away.
Use all 30 hashtags when making posts and often repost other photos related to your niche. You should post at-least every 3 hours while you are awake. For example, if you run a fashion page, you can’t always post your product images. So you will need to repost photos from pages who specialize in fashion.
Do not use an automated posting tool like Mass Planner! It will lower your engagement dramatically. I will get into what tools work best later.
Use a like tool. I recommend using Tag Bot. This brings genuine followers and curiosity to your page who will only follow you if they like what they see on your page! This is an important part to making more sales. It’s 10 times better to have people following you who like your products and posts rather than just a random person who follows you because you followed them. Using the Tag Bot ensures you get people who genuinely like your page and products!
I run two repost pages and repost other peoples photos on my page to draw in people who are interested in the niche I use. I then post 2 photos of my products per week in between reposts to generate sales. Put the link to your shop in your bio and offer a coupon code too. This makes the buyer feel like they are getting a better deal.
How to keep sales coming in
This is the key to success. You should be taking new photos of your products at-least once every couple weeks. This gives the audience something new to see rather than the same old photos of your products. Use your cell phone and get creative. Go outside in the grass or hang things from a tree branch. If you do this, your audience will see the small effort you put into the business and are more likely to buy. Most of this is psychological. It’s you vs the followers and it’s up to you to win them into a sale. However much effort you put in is how much you will get out.
It’s not a bad idea to search for other pages in your niche to promote your products if you can get a good deal from them. Create a code for the page and let the page owner use it to give their audience a small discount. Discounts always make people feel like they are getting a deal. Again, psychological mind game.
Always have stories up promoting your products! Never under estimate the power of a story! Offer discount codes and a link back to your page and tell them they
can click the link in your bio to purchase. I’ve generated more sales through stories than posts! So if you do buy promotion on other pages make them toss in a
story for free, but make sure they link back to your page within the story so people know where to buy.
Extend your reach outside of Instagram
Pursue retail stores and tell them you can give them a deal on bulk orders. Sell them 50 at a time for half price but let them know it takes a couple weeks to make the products if bulk ordering. Never be pushy and try to always suit their needs. Search Instagram for subscription boxes and see if they’d like to buy in bulk from you. Almost every niche has subscription boxes these days and they are always looking for new product to put in their boxes.
Sell on Etsy and eBay. If you have more time, you can always sell on Etsy and eBay. More places you sell means more chances of selling!
